Saigon
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Jon,
I just received this. You have permission to post any of my messages, as
long as it's for a good cause. Again, best regards. ROB

Saigon, etc.
My teaching during 1996 and 1997 was exclusively in
Saigon, which I suspect might not qualify as "a smaller city" in Vietnam. I
am aware that many of the other cities, e.g., Da Nang, Nha Trang, etc. have
language centers or Universities with English programs that might provide
employment. However, since I never taught at those schools, I do not have a
lot of information to provide.
I am sure that as far as the compensation is concerned,
you would receive far more teaching at a "private" language center than
teaching at one of the state universities. I taught a class at the General
Studies University in exchange for Vietnamese language lessons. Had I not
taught for in-kind compensation, I probably would have been paid maybe 2-4
dollars an hour.
I can also tell you that I took back to back six month
leaves of absence from an occupation that requires chaotic time commitments
and took great pleasure in my ability to work 12-20 hours a week and was
still able to save enough to live quite comfortably and do pleanty of
traveling. As a teacher, you can command an hourly salary that permits you
to earn in a day or two what natives might earn in a month.
As for job postings, if you are interested in teaching
Saigon, you can always travel there and find the job upon your arrival.
There is a demand for teachers and most do not have difficulty getting at
least as many hours as they want to teach. Indeed, the director of the International English
School at which I taught for more than six months returned to the US for a
couple of weeks last month and told me that the school had greatly expanded
since my return to the US and was still looking for more quality teachers.
If you have specific questions, feel free to email me
directly if that is easier. In the meantime, good luck with your ESL
efforts. ROB
